ESN Introduction Week September

The ESN Introduction Week is the biggest introduction Week for international and internationally oriented students in Groningen! It is the best way to start your time in this city. Discover Groningen with 2000 new international students, get to know each other and have an incredible beginning of your stay.

From Friday, September 3rd, until Wednesday, September 8th 2021, ESN Groningen is organising the Introduction Week for all international and internationally oriented students! It is the biggest international Introduction Week in Groningen, as each year around 2000 students join the week!

The ESN Introduction Week is the best way to start your time in this city. Throughout this week, you will be able to discover everything that Groningen and its student life has to offer, while also getting to know many other international students! In short, it will be an unforgettable and valuable beginning of your stay in Groningen.

During the Introduction Week, you will be put in groups of ca. 16 international students (depending on the COVID-19 measurements at the time) from different countries. Your group will be guided by 2 Introduction Guides: these are Dutch or international students that have lived in Groningen for a longer period of time. They will lead your group during the entire Introduction Week programme, help you get to know the city, and answer any questions you might have.

The Introduction Week will start on Friday, September 3rd in the afternoon, and will finish with a final party on Wednesday, September 8th.
Since university lectures will start on Monday the 6th of September, ESN will only offer an evening program on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, so you can still attend your lectures without missing anything from the programme!

During the week you and your group will participate in our pub crawl, culture day, sports day, comedy show, Dutch language lessons, a movie night and many great parties! It’s the perfect way to meet new people, explore your new city, learn about the Dutch language and culture, and take care of practical issues such as getting a bicycle.

You can get an idea of what the Introduction Week experience is like from these aftermovies from previous years.

A ticket for the whole week costs €37,50 which includes:

  • Access to the entire Introduction Week programme;
  • An ESN Card (worth €7,50) that gives you access to events organised by ESN Groningen throughout the whole year, as well as local and international discounts;
  • A New York Pizza dinner;
  • A goodie bag filled with useful information, goodies and discount vouchers;
  • And a great time while meeting a lot of new people!

Please note:

  • Some events are subject to change depending on the COVID-19 measurements at the time of the Introduction Week.
  • Plan your trip according to the quarantine rules in the Netherlands.
  • If you have to be in quarantine during the Introduction Week, it means you cannot attend the events!
  • If you have not had your vaccination and you have any physical complaints that could be related to COVID-19, such as a fever, a dry cough, or sudden loss of taste and smell, you are not allowed at any physical activities during the Introduction Week before getting tested and receiving a negative test result.
  • The Introduction Week might bring added costs in the form of COVID-19 tests to access certain events. These tests are mandatory to access parties so we can get rid of the 1.5-meter distance. These costs are for your own expenses. We will update this page when more information will become available about testing costs and facilities.

There are a limited number of tickets available, and Introduction Weeks in the past have always sold out. Don’t miss out on the best possible start to your stay in Groningen!

In my first year I joined the Introduction Week of ESN and made so many new friends that I’m still in touch with! It’s a great way to meet a lot of interesting people and to kick-start your time in Groningen! I would advise everyone to join this Introduction Week and make some great memories!
