Family Programme

The ESN Family Programme is a programme for both international students and Dutch host families living in Groningen. With the programme, a student will be matched with a host family, and thereafter, they can meet up to have dinner, go for a cup of coffee, play some games or anything else that they would like to do! Because the international students often live in a student ‘bubble’, for example in dorms or within their international studies, it can be nice to step outside this bubble and explore more of the Dutch culture.

The concept of ESN Family Programme is as follows: based on preferences and interests, an international student is linked to a Dutch Host Family.  During his or her time at the host family, the international student experiences Dutch (family-) culture at its core. At the same time the international student can share his or her habits, cultures, food customs etc. All of this will happen on a voluntary basis.

The aim of the ESN Family Programme is to promote integration and cultural exchange between international students and Dutch families. This benefits both parties. On the one side it creates more understanding in Dutch families for people from other countries and their cultures. On the other side it offers the opportunity for international students to share their cultures and habits, and at the same time get to know more about the Dutch culture!

We are looking for families who would be willing to host a student during the spring semester, this can be once, but also multiple times, depending on your own preferences. Also, the amount of students you want to host can be flexible, and gender, language and cultural preferences can also be taken into account. If you are interested as a family, please send an email to with these specifications: how many students you want to host, how often you would want to host, and other specific preferences regarding the international student.

If you are a student interested in the programme, a sign-up form will be online in the beginning of the spring semester!
