Eelco Sibma – Integration Coordinator ESN Executive Board 2018/2019
Hi guys! I am Eelco Sibma, 23 years old and I am the Integration Coordinator of the 31st ESN Groningen board this year. I was born and raised in the beautiful city you currently all reside in and although I moved to a village close by when I was 6, Groningen will always remain my home. I completed my high school education in Haren at the Maartenscollege after which I immediately started my bachelor International Relations and International Organizations at the RUG. During my bachelor, I did my Minor in Busan, South-Korea, which I enjoyed so much that when I got back I resolved to stay involved in the international community in Groningen. Thusly I ended up in the ESN Board for 2018/2019 and as such my goal is to ensure that every international student here has an amazing experience, just as I had during my exchange. I am easy to spot with my 2 meters in length so don’t hesitate to approach me, for whatever reason.
Why the ESN Board?
I have personally always been very interested and involved in International affairs, which becomes evident from my field of study. Additionally, I’ve always wanted to learn about as many other cultures as possible as I’m convinced that experiences abroad but also the convergence of cultures has become increasingly valuable in today’s society. Furthermore, to be able to show international students this beautiful city that hopefully soon will become their second home is something that any Groninger would love to do.
The position of Integration Coordinator is probably the one that is the vaguest to describe. However, this also means that there is room for new ideas and projects. The tasks of the Integration Coordinator are quite diverse; setting up meetings with external parties, supervising internal and external committees, organizing various activities, representing ESN in several platforms and promoting and executing your own projects. As Integration Coordinator, you are also involved in an event called Experience Groningen, which is organised in cooperation with the municipality of Groningen. Furthermore, you are responsible for the Culture day in both the introduction weeks. The ESN committees under your responsibility are the Buddy & Integration Committee and the International Dinner Committee. Furthermore, another important aspect of the position is ESN’s integration projects, such as the Intercambio Language Exchange Project and the Buddy Program, or coming up with new integration projects like the International Soccer Tournament with a Dutch association
