ESN Groningen is looking for new General Board members!
Do you want to contribute to Groningen’s international student community whilst gaining valuable experience? ESN Groningen is looking for new General Board members! The General Board functions as the primary supervisory organ of the organisation, relying on the diverse experiences of its members and serving as a source of knowledge for ESN’s Executive Board. This part-time position demands just around 10-12 hours per month but also a lot of enthusiasm.
The organisation ESN Groningen consists of different organs. Alongside the Executive Board, there is the General Board who supervises the Executive Board. The main task of the General Board is to form and supervise the implementation of the long-term vision of ESN through the long-term strategic plan. Other tasks include the checking and approving of the policy, the budget, the annual and half-year reports as proposed by the Executive Board. Once a month the General Board and the Executive Board meet to discuss and evaluate the implementation of the policy and the progress of the organisation. The General Board consists of an employee of the University of Groningen, an employee of the Hanze University of Applied Sciences and 10 student members from different academic backgrounds. Every General Board member is also part of a working group in line with their academic or professional background.
Being a member of the General Board will naturally provide you with a valuable experience that will further enhance your resume. It also is not very time consuming, on average taking about 10-12 hours per month, although tasks will be more intensive during the 2 Introduction Weeks. Additionally, your time with your fellow board members and the international students in the city will undoubtedly be very fun!

Experience of current General Board members:
Joachim (Jochem) Eggerding (member of the General Board since 2019):
”Being part of the ESN General Board allowed me to make friends I wouldn’t have made otherwise. Besides the great parties, dinners and events with international students from across the globe, it was working together with other GB’ers towards the same goals that I enjoyed the most (And the drinks together afterwards of course). Also, and especially during COVID, being a GB member kind of made me feel like being a dad of the EB. Being supportive, helping out during events while also being their cheerleader and thinking with them to improve the future situation for students in Groningen is an awesome feeling. Finally, making sure the EB knows that they are doing a good job was, and is, unexpectedly a great experience too (also the drinks afterwards).”
Amy Horsford (member of the General Board since 2020):
”I have really enjoyed my experience in the GB so far. As the GB, we support the Executive Board and help them achieve their long term goals. We also get to do fun stuff such as helping out during the Introduction week and attending events. This year has of course been very different, but I have still enjoyed my fair share of online ESN events. Within the GB we have also bonded over online events such as cooking workshops, game nights, or just hanging out and having a drink. It has been a very enjoyable year with a good balance of work and fun, with a group of like minded internationally oriented students.”
