Movie Recommendations

Hey !! We hope you are all doing well. This week, the Culture Committee is starting a new series of posts (on Instagram as well as on the website) that you can check out ! Since everyone is at home for quite some time, we’ve decided to recommend movies weekly !
This week, we are directly starting week movies revolving around Freedom ! Following the Freedom Day that took place just recently, on the 1st of February, we are offering you these few classics that treat of the matter:

12 years a slave

From the Oscar-winning filmmaker Steve McQueen, 12 Years a Slave follows the story of a free black man, Solomon Northup, in the Pre-Civil War United States. This based-on-a-true-story movie places us through cruelty, joy, anxiety and relief as the main character is abducted and sold into slavery. On his twelfth year as a slave, his lucky encounter with a North American abolitionist will forever change his life. This dramatic movie has an average score of 8/10, won 3 oscars and had more than 500 other nominations and awards and is thus strongly recommended for anyone wishing to enjoy a good historical biographical movie.

The Dictator

On the opposite side, we have an all-time classic starring Sacha Baron Cohen in the military ceremonial tunic of a Middle-eastern dictator by the name of Aladeen. This movie makes the satyre of the american as well as middle-eastern society as the main character Aladeen is summoned to a UN assembly in New York and is passionately trying to protect his lovingly oppressed Republic of Wadiya from the claws of democracy. This movie has an average score of 6.5/10 and won the ASCAP award of 2013. We recommend this movie to anyone looking for a nice laugh or enjoying a comedy with some friends.
